Dear canonical: please let me pay for ubuntu
September 24th 2012TL;DR
I don’t want you getting paid by 3rd-paties for me using ubuntu. I want me paying you for using ubuntu.
Dear canonical,
i am using your linux distribution ubuntu, your product, almost exclusively since warty. i use it for doing my work as a freelance webdeveloper, and i use it for my everyday needs as a computer user. i love it. and i want your product ubuntu to get even better. But: I don’t want to be the product.
I want ubuntu to be a strong competitor to other operating systems und other desktop environments. I want canonical to have a sustainable business. Therefore i want to pay you for using your product. I want to pay you that you have enough resources to enhance the product. I want to pay you for ubuntu so that you don’t need to spend resources on finding ways to plaster your otherwise cool product with feckin' ads and affiliate links to have a sustainable business.
I say: let’s get serious. Name your price. I would gladly hand you $’s for your linux distribution cause it’s worth it! You have a cool product, why not let me pay for it?
I hold no grudge against you when you say that the free ride is over. But please: let me pay you instead of selling me. OK?
Update
Here’s the blogpost by Mark Shuttleworth regarding the Amazon lens. He states that the search results aren’t paid ads and that it will make ubuntu just better. Frankly, i couldn’t care less about such feature. I would rather see better (desktop-)software and less bugs than more bogus.
